Introduction
Sandboxels is a free, in-browser falling-sand simulator. You pick an element — water, sand, fire, wood, a plant, an animal — and draw it on a canvas. The elements then interact: water flows, fire spreads, plants grow, and materials react with each other. There is no score, no level and no fail state in the base game. That freedom is the point, and it can also feel overwhelming at first. This guide gives you a first hour that actually teaches you the game.
Your first 15 minutes
- Open the official game from the Play page.
- Pick Water from Liquids and draw a pool. Watch it flow and settle.
- Pick Sand and pour it into the water. Watch it sink and pile up.
- Pick Fire and draw it on a piece of Wood. Watch it spread, then burn out.
- Press Space to pause, and R to reset when you want a clean canvas.
Controls worth learning early
- Left click draws, right click erases, middle click picks an element from the canvas.
- Scroll (or
+/-) changes cursor size. A small cursor is for detail; a large one is for filling areas. Shift+ click draws a straight line.Eor/searches for an element by name.SpaceorPpauses the simulation, so you can build a scene and then watch it run.
Your first hour, in stages
Stage 1 — one element at a time. Learn water, sand, fire and wood on their own. Stage 2 — pairs. Try water + magma, fire + plant, ice + water. Stage 3 — a small scene. Build a landscape with ground, water and plants, then add fire or an animal and watch it change. Stage 4 — mods, if you want them. Only now, enable one mod from the verified directory — Spring or Building are gentle first mods — and test it alone.
Beginner mistakes
- Drawing everything at once and not seeing what any single element does.
- Using a huge cursor for detail work.
- Enabling many mods before learning the base game, then not knowing what is vanilla and what is a mod.
